 When choosing the perfect backsplash, the first question to consider is “what do you want to be the focal point”? In the kitchen we have quite a few elements that we need to complement and work with. Here are a few things to keep in mind as you look at tile.
Try using a contrasting grout or a white grout for two different results with the same Brooklyn 3x6 tile. If you are working with a busy patterned granite, marble or wood countertop, then maybe a classic white subway tile would be a good option for your kitchen. Typically a solid coloured backsplash won’t fight against the unique characteristics that are expected in a patterned countertop. White tile can also give your space a clean and fresh, minimalist feel.
Bianco Carrara Marble (left) & Travertine (right) Natural stone can also be a great choice for your backsplash. Natural stone can work well in most decorating schemes and comes in a wide range of colours, shapes, and sizes and it has a beauty that is hard to replicate authentically in a ceramic tile. Using this material will give your kitchen a one-of-a-kind look as there will be no manufactured "pattern repeat".  Simple white kitchen cabinetry is always "in" which gives you so many ways to add personality and a focal point to your kitchen through tile. Try a glass or stone mosaic, like the herringbone Stone Elegance above, or a pop of colour with a ceramic tile like the blue Colonial series, below left or Opal series, below right. These can add some interest to plain white cabinetry, or a small kitchen.
If you prefer a kitchen with a rustic theme, using brick, such as our Smoked or Tumbled Brick series, is a good choice. A standard red brick works well with traditional or industrial accents and will stand the test of time. We love using this type of material with other weathered elements, like classic cabinetry or a hand-scraped wood. You also can get a similar look with a textured porcelain tile like our New York, NYC Brick, or Urban Brick series.
Tumbled Brick Rome Red and Rome Blend Another way to make a statement, is to consider the shape and pattern of your tile. You can easily freshen up your room by working with a uniquely shaped tile. Hexagon tiles have been popular recently and add a modern element to a kitchen. Installing a subway tile in a herringbone pattern also adds interest. You can also bring the tile up to the ceiling, as it adds some additional height to your room. Or how about creating focal point with a "mat" or feature behind the stove? This is a fun way to incorporate a patterned tile without making the space too busy, or a more expensive tile without breaking the budget.
If you use a shiny tile when there is under cabinet lighting; it illuminates beautifully and will brighten up your space. Patterned tiles can also make a fun statement when combined with a simple cabinetry like the Art Nouveau series below.  So, is there a wrong choice when picking the perfect backsplash? Honestly, there really isn’t as long as you choose a tile that coordinates well with the colour palette in your kitchen and the style of your home. A backsplash is such a small area that it's a space you can experiment and have fun with. It truly is about going with your gut instinct and finding something you love!
