You’ve started thinking about updating your kitchen or bathroom, but there are so many options out there! Cabinets, flooring, appliances, backsplashes, faucets, hardware, countertops…. it can quickly start to get overwhelming and expensive. Tile is commonly found in renovations as a durable backsplash option or hardworking flooring choice… but have you ever thought of using tile as a countertop? If you’ve never explored this option before, then here are four reasons to consider tiling your countertop.

Incredible Durability
Porcelain tile will give you the benefits of scratch, temperature and stain resistance. Compared to traditional counter surfaces like quartz, laminates or natural stone, porcelain is incredibly durable. You can get the beautiful look of natural stone, but without the maintenance!

Fast and easy installation
Unlike quartz and natural stone counters, which are made of large and heavy slabs that require specialized carrying and seaming equipment, porcelain tile is much lighter and will not require specialty tools or excessive floor reinforcing.

Stain proof grout
If you’re thinking of the tiled countertops and wide grout lines of years past (maybe you’ve even torn out old tile countertops in your kitchen renovation!) you might be wary of turning around and tiling your new countertop. However, the grout of today is not the same as the grout of the 1980’s or 1950’s.
If you choose a large tile there will be few grout lines. Grout joints can be as tiny as 1/16th inch wide and colour matched to the tile so they are hardly noticeable. New epoxy grouts are also stain resistant and require no sealing. Laticrete Spectralock epoxy grout, for example, features antimicrobial protection, so it is perfectly food safe and non-absorbent.

Design Options
Did you know that some new series are available in single pieces of tile larger than 30” x 60”? These large format tiles are perfect for a sleek, modern counter with minimal grout lines!
However, if you are looking for a retro look you can always go for the more classic 4x4 or 8x8 square tiles. This is also a very minimalist European look.
Affordability
Lastly, one of the best features of tiled countertops is that they are extremely cost-effective per square foot, when compared to quartz or natural stone countertops. When you tile your countertop, the result is a high-end look without the high-end price tag!
