With the arrival of warm weather, the first thing that comes to mind are all the beautiful colours that start to come to life. Sometimes it can be hard to incorporate these tones into your home, because of the commitment needed, but here are some easy ways to introduce colour into your home. With a pop here and a splash there, you can completely change the look of your space! One of the easiest ways to add some colour is through your choice of linens and pillows. If your walls and tile are neutral, you can quickly change your soft furnishings whenever you’re in the mood for a new colour scheme, without great expense. Accessories and furniture can also brighten up your room; try adding a fun lounge chair and some complementing wall art. If you’re ready to commit to colour, but are still dipping in your toes, one of the easiest ways to create a dramatic change is of course to paint your walls. Paint is a cost effective way to add life to a room, and it can be changed without too much trouble down the road. When choosing paint, be sure to bring numerous paint swatches home to view them in your own lighting and check the swatch throughout the day before committing, since different daylight and artificial light can dramatically change the colour tone. Also keep in mind that whether you are in the northern or southern hemisphere can dramatically change the way the colours look in your space. Of course, one of the most impactful ways to add colour to your space is with tile! Coloured tiles have been enjoying a resurgence in popularity over the past few years, with many different shades and styles available. Whether you’re going for a retro or modern look, there is a coloured tile to suit your space. In commonly tiled spaces, like kitchens and bathrooms, a small amount of colour can make a huge impact, so don’t feel the need to drench your space from ceiling to floor. In this kitchen above, you can see how adding one band of coloured tile in the backsplash energizes the space and enhances the tile work beautifully. You can easily achieve this look without breaking the pocketbook. So, now that you’ve decided to add some colour to your space, which colour should you choose? Here’s a quick rundown on the many moods of colours. Colonial Marine Matte & Brillo Blue is the colour of water and is calming and cool. It is associated with feelings of tranquility, serenity and peace. On the colour wheel it is the coldest colour, so it is perfect for summer and for hot climates. Blues are very popular in Mediterranean countries like Greece, and they look absolutely stunning in bright sunshine! Light shades of blue can be relaxing and calming, while bright blues can feel refreshing. If you add a little bit of yellow to blue, you get turquoise, which can feel playful or calming depending on how you incorporate it. You will often see pale turquoise shades used in spas or bathrooms, where they are perfect for creating a relaxed ambience. We have so many beautiful blue tiles in stock, as it is such a popular colour choice! Green is the colour of nature and is the most restful to the eyes. It is harmonious and calming, but also represents new growth. A mix of both warm and cold (blue and yellow) green is a very stable and balanced colour, and because of its close connection to nature, green can actually act as a neutral in some spaces giving you greater versatility with decorating. It is warmer than blue, so it is a good choice when you want a fresh feeling in your space, but not the coolness of blue. Green is a classic colour that has been around for ages, and shows no signs of waning in popularity. Red is a hot, intense and bold colour, often associated with passion, love or anger. In design, red can either be classic - think of a red painted barn for example- or modern- think of a space filled with light, airy whites and neutral tones, with a sudden and unexpected pop of red in an accent. Red can also be found in nature in flowers, berries, and red clays and stones. We carry one series of faux marble, the Scot series, in a shade of red that, with its varied colour and pattern, will give your space a natural look. Pink is a softened version of red, and is strongly associated with femininity, sweetness and youth. In lighter shades it is a soft and soothing colour, but in bright shades it feels bold, youthful and even slightly rebellious. Many people associate pink with little girls, but pink can be done in mature way as we saw in recent years with the resurgence of “millennial pink”. Light shades of pink have been popular in home décor since the mid-century and can often be elegant and glamourous when paired with other soft tones and textures. We have one series in pink, which combines a soft pink tone with a penny-round shape for a retro feel. Yellows and oranges are happy and energetic colours. Warm and cheerful, they can also become overwhelming in too large of a dose. The colour of sunshine, yellow is the brightest shade on the colour wheel. Orange combines a touch of red, making it more energetic. In bold shades, these two colours can be youthful and bubbly, adding a real impact to your space. In more subdued or earth shades, they feel antique; as though the colours have achieved a patina over time. We don’t have any yellow coloured tiles in stock, but we do carry the Wadi series, available in a beautiful terra cotta orange. As you can see from this overview, colour can be used successfully in any room in your home, whether you choose to “colour drench” or add just a splash here and there. Whatever your decorating style, there are so many colours to choose from, and you are sure to find one you love!
